Signs You Need To Have Your Foundation Repaired

Owning an older home can be both a curse and a blessing. One of the best parts about owning an older home is that it's usually not only in a more established area, but older homes tend to have a lot more character than brand new ones. The difficult thing about old homes, however, is that you can run into a variety of different issues with them including a cracked or damaged foundation. Because your foundation is the base of your home and it's essentially part of the glue keeping it together, if you notice anything wrong with it then it's time to have it repaired. But what are some signs that you need to call a foundation repair specialist?

Cracks In Foundation

If you go down to your basement, you will see where your foundation starts and where it ends. Your foundation is the cement that was initially poured before your house was built. If you have an unfinished basement, then take a close look at the cement walls. Are they cracked? Do they look damaged at all? If you notice either large or small cracks in your foundation, it's a sign that it has been shifting and that you should have it repaired. The longer that it sits there without being repaired, the more damaged it's going to get.

Slopes In Floors

If you have hardwood floors on your main floor, try taking a ball and setting it in one corner of a room. Does it roll to the center? If so, then this is a strong indication that your floors are sloping. One of the most common reasons why floors start to slope is because your foundation is starting to sag or crack a little bit. Typically, a foundation repair company will be able to come to your house, put it on stilts, and then stabilize the center of your house so that it doesn't sag any more than it already has.

Cracks In Walls

In addition to seeing cracks in your actual foundation, a lot of homeowners will see cracks in their exterior drywall. Cracks can mean two things; they can either mean that your house has settled into the soil that it was built on (which can be very common), or it can mean that there is a problem with your foundation. A foundation repair specialist should be able to come to your house to determine the ultimate cause.
